Unleash the Power at Sunset Speedway: Where Racing Dreams Come to Life
The Sunset Speedway Club was formed in May 1987 by a small group of enthusiasts who lobbied the local Buller District Council to allow their usage of land near the North Beach for a Speedway track.
Local roading contractors, Colin and Roy Wishart of Wishart Construction Ltd, got behind the effort and provided the heavy machinery and along with volunteers, Wishart Raceway began to take shape, and it retained this name for many years.
Sunset Speedway was a B Grade track of Speedway New Zealand for many years and catered for all grades with bikes being particularly strong through the late 1990s.
Sunset Speedway joined the Circle Track Racing Association (CTRA) around 2018.
The track is 302m long with banked corners and concrete walls around 70 percent of the track. The track base utilises cement by-products from the now closed Holcim Cement Factory, which allows racing to continue despite rainy weather in the days prior.
The club runs all classes and bids for CTRA Championships as appropriate.
The Club looks forward to its ongoing relationship with CTRA, and also celebrating its 40th Birthday in three year’s time.

“We promote the enhancement of our chosen sport, improved safety, comradeship and good morale. These are the basic principles that CTRA was founded on and are still our goals today. CTRA provides an alternative Governing Body to Motorsport, that is affordable to all its members.”
