Kaikohe Speedway: Your Ultimate Destination for Thrilling Racing!
Welcome to the Kaikohe Speedway site for the latest information and calendar!
Kaikohe Speedway started out in the early 70s as a real grassroots paddock bash beside the show-grounds on Ngawha Rd, before moving to the current location on State Highway 12 In 1974,
The site has seen some major changes over the last 50 years. The club has progressed from a bare, bulldozed oval in the paddock, with standard fence posts and tires dropped over the top to mark the outside of the track, later buried by dirt banks. Thanks to a lot of time and hard work from members, as well as support from local businesses, and charitable trusts.
The track layout has changed a number of times over the years with the track entry/ exit being moved a number of times
as the track was widened and lengthened. Of course, as the track improved, cars got faster and faster.
By the early 2000s sections of concrete walls began replacing dirt banks. 2002 saw the beginning of major improvements with dedicated club rooms being built, and clay brought in to improve the racing surface and reduce some of the dust. By 2007 -2008 there were concrete walls right around the track and a proper catch safety fence erected to improve the safety of drivers and spectators.
Oct 2008 saw the biggest burnout pad in Northland at 30 x 30 metres square being laid inside the track. This added another dimension to the club with a couple of well-supported events each year.
2010 saw the old tin shed used by commentators and lap scorers finally give up the ghost, to be replaced with a Portacom and platform. Also, this year saw a local source of new clay brought in and laid to improve the racing surface further. Kaikohe can now offer a track equal to any of the major tracks throughout the country.
Racing season runs from October to mid-May.
Kaikohe Speedway remains a family-friendly motorsport venue where Mum, Dad and the kids can all safely get out there, learn some new skills and have some great fun behind the wheel, either turning laps or chasing smoke on the pad. If you are interested in any of the events or getting into racing, or just keen to be involved as a volunteer, all are welcome! Please contact any of the committee members. We are happy to answer any questions and are keen to help you get started.
The club’s biggest event on the calendar is the Annual Two-Day Easter Stampede with drivers and cars coming from as far as the Waikato to enjoy a great weekend of racing and family fun. While putting on a great show for the local spectators and travelling supporters, with larger fields of cars and grades not normally seen at standard club days, the weekend also winds up with the famous Kaikohe Demolition Derby! Our local boys and girls are willing to take on any competitors!
Easter 2024 will mark Fifty Years for the club, so check out our Facebook page and watch this space for further information as there are big plans in the pipeline to mark the event in style. Hope to see you all track side!
